The Love Inspire Foundation
Upon returning from a 6 month sojourn in Guyana, South America, I found myself in my hometown of Burton-on-Trent. Being a Londoner at heart after growing up in Brixton, South London, in the past had a love hate relationship with this little town in the heart of the Midlands that eventually led to me deciding it was time to travel and never return to live here ever again. However life took its course and here I was after almost 3 years back 'at home' but much had changed! In Guyana the general attitude of despair and a lack of faith in the country and wider community especially among the youth really led me to reassess my attitude towards my own home town, for I think it is very true to say that what we reflect and expect is very often what we get back. A change of attitude really did almost instantaneously open doors and reveal opportunities as I saw that this little town contained so many incredible people going about life and being of benefit to their local communities.
At a local networking group aimed at the Afro-Caribbean community Called '1st Friday' I met Monica Dunbar the founder of the Love Inspire Foundation. She is a bright spark who is always busy with various projects and helping out individuals in her community. I was able to see her at work as she develops the foundation and involved herself in the established 'Holiday Hungry' project that she runs here in Burton-on-Trent. The project is aimed at families that require support to feed and care for their children during school holidays. If the social and political climate in the UK continues along its present trajectory, projects such as these will come to be valued and needed more and more so hats off to Monica for stepping up and providing such an incredible service!
So I met Monica just as I had decided I wanted to try my hand at capturing the stories of the people in my hometown, we spoke and very soon I started going along to the holiday club and uniform distribution events with my camera and I have to say it was huge learning curve for me! It challenged me and taught me a lot about not letting perfection getting in the way of growth and progress as well as brought me into direct contact with people who really need services such as these run by local people who know their community. I really do hope to work on more projects like this with a team in the future! So if you are interested please get in contact with me as I would love to hear from you
